December Undergraduate Commencement Information
All degree candidates must submit an Application for Graduation and $25.00 payment check or cash by the last Friday in September. If you are graduating with multiple degrees in a single term, you must complete a separate Application for Graduation form and pay a $25.00 non-refundable fee for each degree. For more information about application visit Graduation Application.
You must legibly complete and return your yellow Commencement Attendance form and the white Graduate Statistical Information form you
will receive in the mail to the Office of the University Registrar, 107 Canfield Administration Building South, no later than
Friday, December 6, 2013, to advise us of your plans. Return the forms whether or not you are participating in
commencement. The Attendance Form lets us know what to do with your diploma and gives us permission to include your name and degree
information in commencement publications, including the ceremony program and press release. If you are graduating with degrees from
two different UNL Colleges, please list on your yellow Commencement Attendance Form which College you wish to be seated with for the
ceremony. If you have misplaced the forms, visit Canfield room 109 for duplicates.
Commencement is Saturday, December 21, 2013, at 9:00 a.m., Pinnacle Bank Arena, 400 Pinnacle Arena Drive, located on R
Street, west of 9th Street. Follow the signs inside the Arena and report to the loading dock staging area at the north end on
ground level no later than 8:00 a.m. Leave your personal items and valuables with your guests. You will not be allowed to carry these
items into the ceremony with you. The processional begins promptly at 8:50 a.m., and you must be checked in and wearing your regalia and
in line before that time. Students who participate in the ceremony are expected to remain for the entire event. You will not be
allowed to collect your diploma and depart before the recessional. It will be important to vacate the Arena as promptly as practicable
after the ceremony recessional so venue staff can prepare for two basketball games later on Saturday.
Campus parking lots are available without charge or permit on commencement Saturday. Flat fee event parking will be available in
the Pinnacle Bank Arena garage and the Red Garage managed by the City of Lincoln.
Commencement is not required in order to graduate.
Participation means attending the Commencement ceremony in academic costume, marching in the processional and recessional, and going forward to the stage to receive your diploma from your Dean. Students who participate in the Commencement ceremony are expected to be present throughout the entire ceremony. You will not be allowed to receive your diploma and depart before the recessional.
Graduation Services will mail information regarding instructions for the commencement ceremony to all degree candidates approximately
four (4) weeks prior to graduation. You must advise us of your plans concerning participation so that seating and diploma arrangements
can be made. For more information, please contact Graduation Services, 109 Canfield Administration Building South, (402) 472-3636.
Graduates with Disabilities
Graduates with disabilities are welcome and should notify us several days before Commencement to allow time to establish reasonable
accommodations. Please report any special needs to Assistant Registrar Jennifer Verhein at (402) 472-3640. She will advise
you regarding procedures to be followed. Also please note your need for accommodations on your yellow Commencement Attendance
Form. Disabled Parking is available in Campus lots and in marked spaces in the Haymarket area. Handicap seating for
commencement guests is available on the concourse level of the Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Admission to Commencement
Your family and friends are cordially invited to attend and may sit in any non-reserved seats other than the main floor, which is set for
the graduates, faculty, and dignitaries. Tickets are not required for the ceremony. Handicap seating for commencement guests is available
on the main concourse level of the Pinnacle Bank Arena. The commencement ceremony at the Arena will be streamed live on the UNL website
at www.unl.edu. Because there are two UNL basketball games scheduled for Saturday afternoon, we will
need to vacate the Arena as promptly as practicable after the commencement ceremony.
All participants are required to wear academic caps and gowns appropriate to the degree they are receiving at Commencement. You may order
regalia in person or by mail from the University Bookstore, City Campus Union, or you may simply pick it up at the Wick Center on
December 3 or 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Direct your regalia questions to the Bookstore at (402) 472-7300.
Each candidate who participates in the Commencement will receive a diploma from a College Dean on the ceremony stage. All graduates
will proceed to the stage alphabetically by College from their seats as directed by the Marshals. A professional photographer will take
your picture as you are handed your diploma and as you come down the ramp from the stage.
All financial obligations to the University must be satisfied before your diploma will be released. If you are uncertain about this matter, check with the Office of Student Accounts, 124 Canfield Administration Building North (402) 472-2887.
Candidates who choose not to participate in Commencement may receive their diploma as follows:
1. Pick it up at the Pinnacle Bank Arena diploma room between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. only on graduation day. See venue signs for location of the room and bring your photo ID with you. Be mindful that the Saturday undergraduate commencement will affect traffic patterns to the Arena and parking availability.
2. By mail as requested on the enclosed yellow form. Diplomas will be mailed January 3, 2014. No mailing charge to United States addresses. There is a $15.00 mailing fee for international addresses.
3. Pick it up at the Graduation Services Office, 109 Canfield Administration Building South, beginning January 2, 2014. Bring your photo
ID with you.
